    Girls vs. boys
I enjoy your wiki as I am also a CS teacher.

I did want to provide you with a new perspective on your observation of girls vs. boys and the file type exercise. You stated that the girls "didn't seem very interested in exploring the files." I would beg to differ. They were interested, however, that was not the assignment. The boys were not following your directions, they were goofing off. In teaching we have to remember that girls will, typically (not every girl, not every time, but typically), want to follow the instructions and will do the assignment. Therefore, if you felt that the boys were learning more, then you will need to change your assignment to allow those who follow directions to explore the files more completely.

We as teachers need to understand our students and allow all the "permission" to explore with our assignments.

    testing for understanding
The Monash childrens science team had a small battery of multiple choice questions that they could grind adults and students through. This tool helped them to measure whether they 'seem' to be good at understanding science or not. Comparing different groups of people from the start of their computing experience and at different skill levels might help teachers to untangle the beliefs that they bring to the classroom.
